Teaching Experience

Background

My research career begin with a Masters degree program in Prof. Minoru Kanehisa's lab, in Kyoto University. Following that, I returned to the US to study computational biology at UC Berkeley with Prof. Eugene Lawler and Prof. Dan Gusfield (at UC Davis). On the computional side my academic interests are in programming, algorithms, and application of machine learning. On the biology side I have a special interest in protein sub-cellular localization.

After finishing my PhD in Berkeley I did a two year post-doc in Tsukuba, Japan and then had a three year break from research, in which I worked as a software engineer for two start-up companies (one of which, Eland, is still around), learned a fair amount of Mandarin (in Taiwan) and visited many magical places such as Black Rock City and Crater Lake.

Position at Tokyo University

I am a visiting associate professor at the Gradute School for Frontier Sciences, Tokyo University. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact me.

Computational Biology Research Center

I am too lazy to continually update this section. Hopefully my team page and my publications will give you some idea of what I am working on.

Contributions to the Community

I serve on the Program committee of ISMB and the KLLBI bioinformatics workshop of PRICAI. I am on the editorial board of the journals Computational Biology and Chemistry: Advances and Applications and CBI-Journal. I have also served as a peer reviewer for journals including: Bioinformatics, Nucleic Acids Research, Journal of Molecular Biology, Protein Science, BMC Bioinformatics, The IEEE Journal of Bioinformatics, The Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and PLoS Computational Biology.

Grant Record: Some information on my (currently unimpressive) record on obtaining competitive research funding.
